Critics and Reviews
The Vault is a well-made, well-written and well-acted variation on this theme, but too timid to go all-out weird. The vault here is merely plagued by a masked ghost from an earlier heist rather than, say, the site where the Devil stores the souls he’s bargained for, or the Hellmouth that crashed the global economy. Heist meets horror in Dan Bush’s film, with a team of robbers finding a lot more than dollar bills in the vault of the bank they are holding up. The heist bit is quite smartly handled, with James Franco rocking a natty moustache-and-mullet combo as a bank employee and Taryn Manning, better known as Pennsatucky in Orange Is the New Black, impressively obstreperous as one of the robbers. Pay attention to the opening credit sequence of this heist-horror hybrid, as it proves key to fathoming the contrived and purposefully obscure scenario concocted by director Dan Bush and co-scribe Conal Byrne. Desperate to help brother Scott Haze pay his debts, estranged sisters Taryn Manning and Francesca Eastwood hatch a plan to rob the Centurion Trust bank. However, they quickly discover that there isn’t enough in the safe to bail Haze out and agree to act upon a tip-off from assistant manager James Franco to try the vault in the basement.
