Vera, Ray, and Sam, a seemingly normal family, are haunted by more than mere ghosts. The lingering horror of their past threatens their ability to function as a loving family until they become enlightened by a mystical encounter. From that moment on, they’re thrust into a horror worse than anything they’ve ever experienced. Personal demons manifest and tear the family apart from the inside out as they come to terms with their past.
Critics and Reviews
Written and directed by Michael Williams, The Atoning is a fun mystery of a haunted house horror movie that keeps you guessing and on edge throughout. You get me a horror film with a bit of atmosphere and at least a little bit of subtlety, and I’m there. The Atoning was all that and more, so I was definitely into it. Full review
“The Atoning” opens on a mother tucking in her son for the night. The young boy asks when his father is coming home, to which his mother replies she doesn’t know. But the woman reminds her son that they have a long drive ahead of them, so she wants him asleep by the time Uncle Danny gets there. Full review
There’s a point in The Atoning when viewers may hesitate, wondering if what they’re watching is a story about guilt by association. Creating this uneasiness is perhaps its best trick, as it’s a thought that’s going to be equally pertinent in the minds of the characters. Having less information to work with than his parents, Sam might be expected to be the least interesting character, but Bosarge does a lot with the role and his naturalness helps to give the film an edge that no amount of over-familiar moody lighting can achieve. When his ghostly visions reveal something sinister, it’s much eaiser to feel fear and concern than it is to connect with the consciously remote adults. Full reviewJennie Kermode
