Synopsis

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Critics and Reviews

Anyone expecting the movie “It Comes at Night” to live up — or, rather, to live down — to the self-consciously cheesy promise of its name, which hints at the kind of nocturnal boogeyman who has haunted so many horror films before it, must be unfamiliar with the work of its writer and director, Trey Edward Shults. That’s not surprising, given that Shults’s only previous feature, the family drama “Krisha,” was not widely seen, despite garnering several nominations and awards for the first-time filmmaker. With that 2015 debut, about an addict (Krisha Fairchild) attempting to reconnect with her estranged relatives, Shults demonstrated a flair for intense psychological confrontation — one that he puts into powerful new service in this work, a deeply creepy change of direction into genre moviemaking. Taut, smart, intense and genuinely scary, Trey Edward Shults’s “It Comes at Night” fulfills the promise, and then some, of the filmmaker’s 2015 debut feature, “Krisha.” This small-scale prodigy of a post-apocalyptic horror flick provides a new vision of isolationism in the persons of a family—father, mother and 17-year-old son—taking refuge in a boarded-up house from which they venture only rarely, and with gas masks over their faces when there’s a chance of contact, or even proximity, with someone affected by a lethal plague…Full review

Over and over again in It Comes at Night, Trey Edward Shults’s bravura piece of psychological horror, the camera pans down a long, dark hallway, inching closer and closer to a locked red door. That door is the only way in and out of the boarded-up house in which the film is set; behind it lurks the unknown. It Comes at Night is set in a world gone to rot, where vague nightmares might be waiting outside; it’s a film that plays on fear, rather than monsters, and explores how that kind of grand, unknowable fright makes people behave, well, monstrously.
